My name is Mark Parsons I'm a 49 year old who is hoping he is still in his mid-life crisis!! (rather than the male menopause). I have decided to try and raise some money for the Steeple Church Development Fund. Having been inspired by Mark Beaumont a fellow Dundonian. I came up with the idea of cycling around Scotland as it makes a change from John o' Groats to Land's End. I only found out later it was further and far more hilly!! I will be travelling a total of 1196 miles over a period of 17 days, an average of 70 miles per day. The total additive height attained over the whole trip is 31927 meters, which is equivalent to 3.6 times up Mount Everest - from sea level. Please help me by following me exploits and leaving me cheery messages and telling others about it. If you want to make a pledge all the better and thanks so much for your support. All the money pledged will go to the Steeple Development Project

Our stay at the JOG youth hostel was very enjoyable, we shared the hostel with an amateur gold prospector, Joe and him were swapping gold stories :). Even Rio the dog enjoyed the hostel as he got to sleep with Joe. The cycle down to Helmsdale was uneventful apart from Mr Motivator complaining I was going too slow for him to get warm :-D. "The only thing we will catch at this speed is pneumonia"
The hostel in Helmsdale is a converted old school with a big log fire and leather seats. We went for tea at the famous fish and chip shop 'La Mieage' where we had a Whale with chips, it was yummy.
Feeling much better today, the old pins have recovered from the 90= miles and 3600 feet climbs over the last two days.
Joe has made a few gold deals at the local antique shop that I think will cover his expenses for the whole trip :)
Looking forward to meeting up with Ken Morley tomorrow who will be cycling with us for a few miles

Mark

  1. Last few days and sounds like your legs are just getting going. Perhaps you should go round again now you have got the hang of it? Fantastic job. Paul
